Café Paradiso restaurant in Cape Town, South Africa

Review: 18 June 2006 (Father's Day) [This review written by the Dry Vegeterian]

I visited Café Paradiso restaurant at 110 Kloof Street in Cape Town on the 18th June 2006 (Father's Day). The setting is fantastic, with Table Mountain in the background. It was one of those perfect Cape Town winter's days...no wind and sunny. For starters I had the minestrone soup, which had nice chunky pieces of vegetable in eat, and my main course was Warm Goat's cheese salad - excellent. Dessert was their sorbet - also fantastic. My wife had warm greek lamb salad for a main course, which she described as excellent; for dessert she had vinegar pudding which she found slightly dry, but edible (for me vinegar has no place in a dessert). The waitress struggled to keep up with our party of 9. She got one of the orders wrong and somebody had to wait for about 15 minutes while everybody else was eating their main course, and the desserts arrived half and half with about 10 minutes in between. We did notice that the waitresses managed better with the smaller tables. At the end of the meal brandy was served to the men free of charge, which was enjoyed by some (I don't drink alcohol, and the neat brandy was half-touched by others in our party). All in all I will definitely visit this restaurant again because of the great atmosphere and food. It's possibly best to arrive in smaller numbers (less than 6). Note that you have to pay a 10% tip if you're a party of 6 or more (which explains why they concentrate their good service on the parties with small numbers?).
